چکیده
Introduction of newer hypotensive agents from time to time is a pointer to the unsolved problemof the treatment of hypertension. Severe hypertension (grades III and IV) is still a challengingproblem for the physician. In the therapeutic armamentarium of hypertension somenew drugs have disappeared faster than they were introduced because of their serious hazardsor limitations. A clinician has, therefore, to continue trying established drugs singly invaried doses or in combination (3).

The hypotensive activity and side effects of methyldopa, clonidine, and guanfacine.
Clonidine (Catapres, Catapresan), guanfacine (Estulic), and methyldopa (Aldomet) are the prototypes of centrally acting antihypertensive drugs. Clonidine and guanfacine are lipophilic drugs that readily penetrate into the brain, where they stimulate alpha-adrenergic receptors in the pontomedullary region. The stimulation of these central alpha-adrenergic receptors has been shown to activate an ...

Background and Objective: To assess the effectiveness and safety of oral amiloride for the treatment of edema in pediatric patients with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome. Methods: A randomized trial of amiloride vs hydrochlorthiazide was done in 34 patients. The mean age was 4.3±0.7 years old. After a 2 week washout of diuretic therapy, nephrotic children with edema were randomized into two gr...
متن کاملOral lichenoid drug reaction.
This is a case report of an oral lichenoid drug reaction of the buccal sulci in a female diabetic patient who was on an anti-hypertensive drug, alpha-methyldopa (Aldomet) and an oral hypoglycaemic drug, chlorpropamide (Diabinese). The clinical features, histological findings and management are presented.
متن کاملGuanfacine alone and in combination therapy in the treatment of moderate and severe hypertension.
This study of guanfacine in 27 patients suffering from moderate-to-severe hypertension showed a satisfactory blood pressure control in 26 patients. Twenty-one of the 27 patients completed a one-year clinical trial with good blood pressure response. The new drugs, acting through the stimulation of the central alpha-adrenoceptors, are useful in patients suffering from moderate-to-severe hypertens...
متن کاملToxicity of methyldopa (Aldomet) to mouse neuroblastoma cells in vivo.
The adrenergic blocking agent methyldopa (Aldomet) is toxic to C-1300 neuroblastoma cells in vivo. Four injections of Aldomet at a dose of 7.5 mg/injection were given over a period of 24 hr to C-1300 neuroblastoma-bearing mice. This treatment killed a significant proportion of the C-1300 neuroblastoma cells. Flow cytometric data suggest that sensitivity of tumor cells to Aldomet is not related ...
